Greetings once again for another season of shitty picks, griping over the Redskins and infantile humor. You feelin' it? I am.
So a few words about the Redskins' opening game loss before we move on to week one of Blogger Deathsport 2008. Of course the "thoughtful" and prudent approach would be to stress that this is but one game, impossible to properly evaluate the true potential of this team.
But generally, while some of us pretend to be thoughtful we don't usually blog to be prudent. The run defense was disconcertingly weak and their offense failed even to show signs of showing signs of anything. Scarily inept they were. It's going to be very easy to be 1-4 after the first five games given the schedule and the state of the team as it starts the season. Further I don't see this rookie coach turning it around. Seems a little like he was thrown to the wolves. A year or two at o.c. would have been nice.
The serious problem as I see it was that the Redskins really didn't make a lot of glaring mistakes. If they had come up with an effort replete with errors, giving the Giants points and generally just fucking up what they were trying to accomplish that would be one thing. But they really didn't seem to screw up as much as suck. They didn't even turn the ball over. They just looked weak, very weak (note: on the positive side Portis runs as hard - still - as anyone in the league).
But if I'm going to talk about mistakes I'd have to point to time management. Very hard to make Gibbs2 look competent at working the clock but that drive with six minutes left me wincing for several hours. When they gave the ball to Portis with three minutes left and down by 9 I had problems, to term it politely, maintaining my composure. At a pro level I can't understand how this happens. I mean, would hiring a common sense coordinator really be such a unusual proposal?
As a typical illogical and easily panic stricken booster of my team, I realize when I say after one game that I don't have much hope for the 'skins 2008 campaign, one has little reason to take it seriously. But screw you. We're going nowhere this year.
-------------------
And now the moment absolutely no one, no one at all, has been waiting for, week one of my NFL picks. This year Blogger Deathsport will be operating with ten participants including a Vikings blog, an Eagles blog, a Jaguars blog, a Steelers blog and a South Carolina Gamecocks blog. Blogger Deathsport's head office remains at the defending champs' digs, Curly R. There's also last years' players at Hogs Haven and Post Game Heroes.
Now with the links out of the way, let's move on to the games shall we. Basically my plan here is to make sweeping predictions for the entire season as I call these games with the hope that one or two will pan out and I can quote myself later in the year to demonstrate my genius.
Sunday
ARZ (2.5) @ SF
This is traditionally the time of year when prognosticators state that this is traditionally the time of year when people say that this year, unlike last year, they will not pick the Cardinals. However, do you like the Niners?
Cardinals
SEA @ BUF (-1)
Let's not get on the Bills bandwagon yet. Seattle will be a good team this season. Seahawks
CIN (-1) @ BAL
Neither team will contend. Bengals here.
DAL (-5.5) @ CLE
Everyone loves the S.Nannies. Giving that many on the road in the opening week, I just don't like it Browns (Have you ever wanted to a team to implode more than this Cowboys team? Please, let me have this)
DET (-3) @ ATL
I suppose you just can't take a rookie qb on opening day, can you? Lions
CHI @ IND (-9.5)
Manning throws 4 tds. Colts (Though I see them struggling a bit this year, ten and six, eleven and five, something like that)
JAX (-3) @ TEN
This particular game could go either way, but I like the Jags to get at least 12 wins and the Titans struggling with Young. Jaguars
KC @ NE (off the board = straight up even)
LOCK OF THE WEEK
Patriots. (They go 13-3 this year, Chiefs will suck)
TB @ NO (-3)
I picked NO last year. And I really like them this year. Fool Me Twice. Saints
NYJ (-3) @ MIA
Lots seem to like the Fins here. Why? Jets. (and yes, the Jets will contend for a playoff spot)
STL @ PHI (-7.5)
Too many points for this much uncertainty. Rams
HOU @ PIT (-6.5)
Some are underestimating the Steeler I think. But Houston has a good young defense. Let's say this one stays close. Texans
CAR @ SD (-9)
Is it the Chargers or Patriots in the Super Bowl? Norv Turner, Super Bowl coach? I don't like them odds. Also nine points is way too many here. Panthers.
Monday
DEN (-3) @ OAK
I got nothing here. Broncos
MIN @ GB (-2.5)
At home I will go with the Pack, though these two will fight it out for their division title.
Season record
0- 1
(Already talk has begun around the office cooler whether we will see .500 again. Let's just say that morale here at CP headquarters is not high as we start deathsport battle)
Super Bowl Pick
New Orleans vs New England
(For entertainment purposes only. Please, for the love of god, NO Wagering)
Redskins
6-10
(Pre Giants game 9-7)
And, no, we are not at all reactionary.
